CHARLESTON, S.C. (Lowcountry Weekend) - Looking to enhance your summer in Charleston? We’ve got you covered with the perfect way to spend a warm summer day on Sullivan’s Island.
Start your day with an iced coffee and head straight to the beach where stations mark each section. Enjoy the sunrise from the dunes or dip your toes in the salty water and listen to the waves crash onto the shore. Sit on the rocks and watch as the cargo ships pull into the harbor and push the tide onto the sand. You’ll be able to spot the Ravenel Bridge and peer into bustling Downtown Charleston from afar.
Are you a history buff? Follow the signs to Fort Moultrie, first built in 1776 out of palmetto logs and sand. This is a standing piece of history that represents a victory for the U.S in the Revolutionary War. Walk the grounds, view cannons, and read up on the history of the fort all while being a one-minute walk from the beach.
After your long day of history and strolling the beach, head into town to enjoy a nice dinner from a variety of family restaurants. There are so many to choose from that it is impossible to go wrong. Sit inside or outside and enjoy live music at any of these locally-owned shops. Afterward, grab some ice cream and walk to the public park to end your perfect summer day.
